“Literature, life & like-minded musicians"

John Thwaites and Susanne Stanzeleit

This year’s festival includes several works inspired by literature of one form or another: Goethe’s poem, Der Erlkönig at Sunday morning’s concert, for example, as well as tonight’s Conte Fantastique by Caplet based on Edgar Alan Poe’s short story, Janáček’s string quartet inspired by Tolstoy’s novella or even Elgar’s piano quintet said to have been influenced by Edward Bulwer-Lytton’s mysterious story. To what degree are composers directly inspired by literature, life events or musical colleagues in their compositions and how is this relevant to today’s performer? The Primrose share their thoughts and findings after recently recording the Elgar Piano Quintet and Brahms’ three piano quartets.
